O
kay this is pretty out of the blue, (like me, pretty, and out of the blue!) but I got a call today from Switzerland. It was from the girl who was doing research down in Somalia. She got back in early January, and is still getting used to being home. So yeah, she just called, like I would pick up the phone and call my parole officer. Just like that. Except the phone call came from ANOTHER COUNTRY. Isn't technology weird?
So we had been e-mailing, and we had both mentioned how it's nice to know people in other countries, because if you ever get your act together, you can fly there, and crash at their place, and be a leech for a few weeks, and wander around a foriegn country, all for just the cost of the flight. Cha-ching!
So she was an exchange student here in the US many years ago. She still talks pretty regularly with her host family, and visits them once every year or so. She wanted to let me know when she was thinking about coming and whether she would get to see me, Dave, and my brother. Of course I extended an invitation to the party palace. Her host family is in Wisconsin, so that might constitute a good summer road trip.
Then she asked when I was coming to Zürich (note my proper use of the umlaut). I had thought about visiting before, and even looked up flights on the web, but I needed to hear a more affirmative invitation before I started thinking seriously about it. And I got it, so now I'm all about Zürich. And get this, you can take trains to Paris, and Italy, and a bunch of other places for relatively cheap. And many of those countries have decent internet connections, so being able to get online and do some remote work isn't that crazy an idea. Plus, if I waited until May, my classes would be done for the summer, and it would be spring time in Zürich.
So I'm stoked beyond all belief. I'm gonna save my pennies, get that cool camera, and go to switzerland sometime in May. That's the plan, Stan. Now I just need to run it by the business partner... =)
